Hometown Heritage at the Carnegie Library Museum Presents Nefarious Iowa: Criminals with Ties to Iowa Exhibit – July 31 to Sept. 20
Immerse yourself in Iowa’s criminal past with the Carnegie Library Museum’s newest exhibit. Explore our displays, discover the surprising criminal history of Perry and surrounding areas, and identify famous criminals with connections to Iowa! Children’s Summer Library Program Finale: Summer Games – Aug. 1
As our send-off to the Children’s Summer Library Program and in honor of the worldwide sporting event beginning in Paris, the Perry Public Library will host our own Summer Games. On Thursday, Aug. 1 from 2-4 p.m., we’ll host a series of games for children to participate in! There will be snacks and we will announce the winners of the Grand Prizes. Teen Summer Library Program Finale – Aug. 2
Close out a summer of fun with a Nerf Free-for-All on Friday, Aug. 2 from 5:50 p.m. to 8 p.m. We will take over the library after it closes and have a Nerf party! No place is safe! Pizza, snacks, and soda will be provided. We will also announce the Grand Prize winners! This August, adult patrons can learn how to create a boho-inspired clothespin display board to show off their favorite summer photos, treasured postcards, or special notes. Learn how to create your own dragonflies using maple tree seedlings with our August Grab and Go Teen Craft Kit. Novel-Teas Book Match: A Monthly Program for Adults
We think a good book and a delicious cup of tea are the perfect pairing. With our Adult Novel-Teas Book Match program, participants can sign up each month to receive an individualized book recommendation, with a complementary tea pairing. Simply register, and complete the personalized Book Match Form by Aug. 15, and our Adult Services Librarian Mindy will help you find your next book, while our tea enthusiast, Trista, will select your tea. August Book Matches will be available for patrons to pick up beginning Sept. 1. Patrons must be 18+ to participate and spots are limited. Adventure in the World of Dungeons and Dragons: Tuesdays – August 6, 13, 20, 27
Join D&D enthusiast, Alex, as she invites players into the world of Dungeons and Dragons this August! Alex will guide players through a new campaign, CandleKeep Mysteries. Sessions are designed to lead you through character creation, understanding the game, and immersing yourself in the campaign. Whether you are new to Dungeons and Dragons, or a more experienced player, patrons 10 and older are invited to join us in the Perry Public Library Community Room on Tuesday nights in August for a series of new adventures! I Scream for Ice Cream Scavenger Hunt (Ages 5 to 14) – Aug. 5-16
Cool off at the Perry Public Library with our I Scream for Ice Cream Scavenger Hunt! There are two ways to play! Find the pictures of ice cream cones hidden around the library. They will each have a letter and a number on them. Find all of the ice cream cones or solve a code using the numbers and letters on the ice cream cones! No registration is necessary for this activity, which is for ages 5-14 and runs during regular library hours from Monday, Aug. 5 to Friday, Aug. 16. This is a free program. Fresh Conversations with Aging Resources of Central Iowa: Cooking for 1 or 2 – Aug. 7
Fresh Conversations is a free nutrition and physical education program for ages 60+. The program offers practical tips and sensible solutions to everyday problems that get in the way of doing what most people want to do: eat well and live well! Fresh Conversations is also an opportunity to connect with other adults for a friendly group discussion. We will meet to discuss our August topic, Cooking for 1 or 2, plus try a tasty recipe on Wednesday, Aug. 7 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Perry Public Library Community Room. Chess Club at the Library – Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
Are you interested in learning how to play chess? Do you already know how to play, but are looking for some local players to challenge? Could you use some tips and practice to improve your skill level? Local Chess Instructor David Oliveira is partnering with the Perry Public Library to teach, mentor, and play chess with players of all ages and experience levels. Whether you are new to chess or looking for a challenging game, mark your Thursday evenings in August for chess instruction and walk-in play at the Library. Students, grades K-12, will meet from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the library Board Room. Chess players of all ages are then welcome to meet from 5:30-7:30 p.m., also in the Board Room, for instruction or competition. Monthly Book Club: The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom – Aug. 20
The Monthly Book Club will discuss Kathleen Grissom’s The Kitchen House, now considered a “contemporary classic.” We will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 1-2 p.m. in the Library Community Room to discuss this month’s book selection, described as “a heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful story of class, race, dignity, deep-buried secrets, and familial bonds.” Everyone interested is invited to join the discussion and participation is free. Paper Crafting with Kathy: All-Occasion and Fun Fold Cards – Aug. 24
August is the perfect time to prepare those all-occasion cards and learn a new fun-fold card style at our Paper Crafting with Kathy class. Kathy Miller leads this series of monthly how-to workshops featuring different paper crafting techniques and creative designs for making greeting cards. The craft series will be held one Saturday each month. We will meet on Saturday, Aug. 24 in the Library Community Room from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The class is free, but space is limited and registration is required. Registration closes on Aug. 22. Are you looking for a quiet, community space to craft? Then, we have the perfect Saturday event for you! The Perry Public Library welcomes crafters and do-it-yourselfers to our dedicated makerspace – now following Paper Crafting with Kathy. You bring your ideas and supplies and we’ll supply the crafting space. Saturday Crafternoons last from 12:30-4:30 p.m. in the Library Community Room and offer a free community space to work on projects in a comfortable environment. August Adult Craft Club: Citrus Printed Tea Towels – Aug. 27
In this month’s Adult Craft Club, we will be creating printed citrus tea towels. This simple, yet beautiful, craft will have you wondering why you haven’t made your own decorated towels before! We will be using lemons and oranges sliced in half, then dipped in fabric paint to print your pattern onto white tea towels. The August Adult Craft Club will meet on Monday, Aug. 27 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Community Room.
