Mahlon Conaway of Perry, a veteran of World War II and recipient of the Legion of Honor, France’s highest national decoration, was celebrated on his 99th birthday during Wednesday’s meeting of the American Legion Post 99 in Minburn.

The Hy-Vee in Perry provided a patriotic birthday cake, and representatives from the American Legion Department of Iowa and 6th District leadership attended as well as several of local Legionnaires.

Conaway was presented with an honorary U.S. flag from U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst that was flown over the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

“We are forever thankful for Mahlon’s contribution and sacrifices to our country, serving during World War II in Europe and at Battle of the Bulge,” said Osborne Post 99 Vice Commander Don Richardson.
