Georgia pair arrested for bank robbery in West Des Moines

The Freedom Financial Bank in West Des Moines was robbed Wednesday afternoon allegedly by a Georgia pair.

A Georgia man and Georgia woman were arrested Wednesday after allegedly robbing a bank teller at gunpoint in West Des Moines and escaping with $1,780.

Daniel Albert Mathes, 51, of 2452 Dothan Road, Bainbridge, Georgia, was charged with first-degree theft and second-degree robbery.

Lisa Michelle Haire, 40, of 125 Church Road, Climax, Georgia, was charged with first-degree theft and second-degree robbery.

The incident began about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday at 1255 Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines at the Freedom Financial Bank, where Mathes allegedly “intentionally showed a firearm to the bank employee, putting the victim in fear for her life,” according to court records.

Haire was allegedly “aiding and abetting” the robbery by Mathes, according to court records.

The Georgians got away with $1,780, fleeing the scene in a 2020 Dodge Ram. They were later arrested by officers of the West Des Moines Police Department.

Mathes is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $20,000 cash-only bond. He is scheduled for a  preliminary hearing Dec. 2 in Dallas County District Court.
