DES MOINES, Iowa — Rob Denson, longtime president of the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), recently received the Karen L. Evans Immigrant Champion Award during the Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit (IES) held on the DMACC Ankeny Campus, the college announced Thursday.

This prestigious Evans award celebrates individuals or organizations that have shown exceptional commitment to empowering immigrant communities and fostering opportunities for success, according to the DMACC statement.

“Receiving the Karen L. Evans Immigrant Champion Award is a tremendous honor,” Denson said during his acceptance speech. “This recognition reflects the hard work of everyone at DMACC, where we are committed to building bridges for all communities, especially those who are new to Iowa and striving for a better future.”

The award is named in honor of Karen L. Evans, who evinced a deep dedication to supporting immigrants and first-generation families. Denson was recognized for his tireless advocacy and leadership in providing accessible education and resources through DMACC, which has positively impacted countless immigrant students and their families.

The IES event brought together business leaders, advocates and community members to celebrate the contributions of immigrant entrepreneurs who are transforming Iowa’s economic and cultural landscape.
