An Adel man was arrested early Sunday and charged with drunk driving and going armed while drunk.
Darrel Norbert Smith, 52, of 119 N. 19th St., Adel, was charged with first-offense OWI and possession or carrying of dangerous weapons while under the influence.
The incident began shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday on Greene Street in Adel, where an officer of the Adel Police Department observed a 2010 Mazda CX-9 exceed the posted speed limit and “cross the center line and fog line multiple times,” according to court records.
The officer initiated a traffic stop in the 24000 block of U.S. Highway 6 and made contact with the driver, Smith, who presented with “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person” as well as “slurred speech, bloodshot, watery eyes and impaired balance,” according to court records.
Numerous empty beer cans were found inside Smith’s vehicle, according to court records. He declined to take standard field sobriety tests or a Datamaster breath alcohol test.
A loaded Glock 43 handgun was located on Smith’s person, according to court records.
Smith was held in the Dallas County Jail on a $1,300 cash or surety bond in advance of an initial hearing in Dallas County District Court.
Smith was convicted of second-offense OWI in 2001 in Dallas County District Court.
