A Des Moines man was arrested Wednesday on a Dallas County warrant in connection with a December incident in which he allegedly shoplifted from a Waukee retail store and for allegedly misidentifying himself this week to officers of the Clive Police Department.

Steven James Spagnolo-Frederichsen, 39, of 1220 Wall Ave., Des Moines, was charged with third-degree theft, interference with official acts, malicious prosecution, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to obey a stop sign and yield the right of way and driving while suspended.

The incident began about 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 22 at a retail store in the 900 block of S. Laurel Street in Waukee, where surveillance video allegedly shows Spagnolo-Frederichsen leaving the store with $250 worth of merchandise for which he did not pay, according to court records.

A warrant for Spagnolo-Frederichsen’s arrest was requested by the Waukee Police Department and ordered Dec. 24 in Dallas County District Court.

Spagnolo-Frederichsen was the subject of a traffic stop about 10 p.m. Jan. 14 in Urbandale, where he allegedly provided his brother’s name instead of his own name to an officer of the Clive Police Department, according to court records. His lie “was not discovered by officers until after he was released from the scene with a citation written to him under his family member’s name.”

On the following day, Jan. 15 about 2:30 p.m., the same officer of the Clive Police Department responded to a report of suspicious activity in the 2100 block of N.W. 159th Street in Clive and made contact with Spagnolo-Frederichsen, whom the officer detained on the previous day’s falsehood and “while patting him down,” the officer found a “pipe with residue on it” on Spagnolo-Frederichsen’s person.

Spagnolo-Frederichsen is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $3,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Jan. 27 in Dallas County District Court.

Spagnolo-Frederichsen was convicted of fifth-degree theft in 2004 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of fifth-degree theft in 2005 in Polk County District Court.
