ADEL, Iowa — The Dallas County Health Department will cohost an online public event, Cancer in Iowa: 99 Counties Project, next month in order to teach the community more about cancer in Dallas County, including the factors that can increase our risk of cancer and the resources available for preventing cancer.

Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in Dallas County, and Iowa has the second-highest and fastest-growing rate of new cancers in the U.S.

The Dallas County Health Department will join the Iowa Cancer Registry and the University of Iowa College of Public Health, in collaboration with the Iowa Cancer Consortium, the University of Iowa Health Care Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Iowa Rural Health Association in hosting the Cancer in Iowa: 99 Counties Project to present county-specific cancer information and address community concerns.

Representatives from the 99 Counties Project will share the latest Dallas County cancer reports, with information about the rates of new cancers and cancer deaths in each county compared to the state of Iowa and the U.S. as well as risk factor data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

There will be time allotted to ask questions, voice concerns or offer suggestions for improving cancer outcomes in the community.

Guest speakers will include Mary Charlton, Ph.D., director of the Iowa Cancer Registry and professor of epidemiology at the University of Iowa College of Public Health and Amanda Kahl, epidemiologist and data analyst at the Iowa Cancer Registry.

The online meeting for Dallas County is set for Thursday, March 6 at 1 p.m. County residents, public health officials, community leaders and policy makers are encouraged to attend the free meeting and participate in the discussion. Advance registration is required.
