State Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott, who visited Perry in 2023, represents Iowa Senate District 22. She announced Monday her candidacy for Iowa's Third District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

DES MOINES, Iowa — West Des Moines Democratic Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott announced Monday her bid for lowa’s 3rd Congressional District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“I’m no stranger to tough fights,” Trone Garriott said in a video posted to Facebook. “I’m the only Democrat in Iowa who flipped two seats from red to blue and then won a district that went to Trump in 2024. I know how to win, and I know how to deliver for Iowans.”

Trone Garriott, a Lutheran minister and leader of the Des Moines Area Religious Council, says she wants to keep the government out of women’s healthcare decisions and lower costs in Iowa.

Trone Garriott was elected to the Iowa Senate in 2020. She defeated Adel Republican Jake Chapman in 2022 and Waukee Republican Mark Hanson in 2024. Her 2025 Congressional campaign will see her challenge U.S. Rep. Zach Nunn, an Ankeny Republican first elected in 2023.

Congressional Republicans reacted to Trone Garriott’s announcement with venom.

“Out of touch Democrat Sarah Trone Garriott is another activist attempting to radicalize Iowa — pushing a dangerous, extreme agenda that would raise costs, allow men in girls’ sports and weaken public safety,” said Emily Tuttle, deputy communications director of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
