The DMACC Perry VanKirk Career Academy will offer a free Digital Literacy class starting Monday evening. The six-week course aims to equip adults with essential computer skills for today’s job market, with particular emphasis on helping displaced workers from the Tyson Fresh Meats plant in Perry that closed last summer.

“As more employers require even basic digital skills, this course provides a much-needed foundation for those re-entering the workforce or looking to advance their careers,” said Eddie Diaz, DMACC VanKirk Career Academy administrator. “We especially encourage those affected by the recent Tyson plant closure to take advantage of this free opportunity—but it’s open to everyone in the community.”

The weekly classes will meet Monday evenings from 6-8 p.m. from Monday, May 19 through Monday, June 23. The course will cover basic computer functions, using email and navigating the internet safely and effectively.

All who want to build confidence in using technology in their personal and professional lives should attend, including non-native speakers of English. This is an non-credit, open-enrollment course, meaning anyone can register. No prerequisites or previous computer experience are required.

“In today’s world, digital skills are essential for everyone—but they are especially critical for English Language Learners,” said John Windheuser, DMACC’s ELL coordinator. “Technology opens the door to employment, education and connection. This class gives ELL adults a safe, supportive space to learn the basics and build the confidence they need to thrive in a digital society.”

Diaz said class participants will receive hands-on instruction in a supportive environment, with access to DMACC computers during class sessions. Register online or call 515-428-8120 or perrycenter@dmacc.edu with questions.
