National Teacher Appreciation Day is observed on the first Tuesday of the first full week of May, falling this year on May 6.

Knowing that most students had a favorite teacher who helped inspire them, the members of the Dallas County Area Retired School Personnel Association (DCARSPA) were happy to show their appreciation again this year to those who share our passion for education by awarding $20 in Perry Bucks to a staff member in each of the four attendance centers in Perry.

Receiving the awards were Piper Hoffman, counselor at the St. Patrick Catholic School, Katie Hardy, second grade teacher at the Perry Elementary School, Olivia Klein, eighth grade language arts teacher at the Perry Middle School, and Erica Stevenson, ELL teacher at the Perry High School. DCARSPA Treasurer Cindy Jafvert distributed the Perry Bucks.

The founding of National Teacher Appreciation Day as a day to honor teachers was actually suggested in 1953 by a teacher, none other than First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who was more than the wife of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Eleanor Roosevelt was an advocate for her fellow teachers. Her love for education began at a young age, when she was privately tutored and encouraged by her aunt Anna “Barnie” Roosevelt. No matter how high she rose on the social ladder, Eleanor never forgot where she came from.

DCARSPA is composed of retired school personnel from around Dallas County.
