The Perry Summer Swim Team extended their undefeated season this week after winning in Denison Tuesday and defeating Glidden Thursday at the McCreary Community Building.

The Perry team, comprising more than 60 swimmers between the ages of 5 and 17, is now preparing for a conference meet July 12 that will finish the season.

The swimmers are coached by 2024 Perry High School graduate Sophia McDevitt, who is in her second full season as head coach. McDevitt set several PHS swim records in her 12-year career, which included training with the Des Moines Swimming Federation.

After a strong senior season, McDevitt decided to retire from competitive swimming and give back to the program.

“I know the mental and physical preparation needed for a race, and I wanted to support younger swimmers,” said the Grand View University student. “Swimming fast and correctly is one of our main goals this season, and it’s working out well.”

McDevitt said success comes from focusing on race strategy and proper technique, and she explained that her experience as a swimmer has helped her lead with confidence and help younger athletes improve their skills and mindset in the water.

Swimming is a family affair for the McDevitts. Sophia’s younger sister, Maddie McDevitt, a senior at Perry High School, helps with the coaching, while their parents, Anne and Matt McDevitt, help run home meets. The youngest member of the family, Matthew McDevitt, also swims on the team.

Perry’s summer swim season will wrap up with a team celebration Sunday, July 6, when the hard work and success of all the swimmers will be recognized.

The sign up for swimming lessons starts July 7. The lessons will be led by several current and former Perry Swim Team members. Parents interested in registering can contact mcb@perryia.org or call 515-465-5621 for more information.
