The 12th annual Memorial Golf Tournament was won Sunday by former Perry High School and Wartburg College golfer Nick Luett, who shattered the scoring record for the summer classic by scorching the Perry Golf and County Club golf course with a nine under round of 65 and 34 (99) to win by two strokes over defending champion Kolby Gilroy 67,34 (101).

The final round started with several individuals in contention for the title. Luett’s 65 led by one stroke over Noah Wilkening (66), two strokes over Gilroy (67), three strokes over Gionni Chiodo (68) and five strokes over Brett Henson (70) and Kolby Chup (70).

Gilroy pulled even with Luett in the championship round when he eagled the par 4 Fifth hole, while Luett made par. Luett pulled ahead by two with a par of the Sixth hole and a birdie on the Seventh hole. He maintained his two-shot cushion over the final two holes to hold off Gilroy for his fifth win in the hometown tournament.

Noah Wilkening finished in third place with a total of 66,37 (103). Luett broke the previous 27-hole record of 102 with his 99. Gilroy also beat the old record with his 101, and Wilkening was close with his 103.

A total of 74 golfers participated in the tournament, with 38 battling for the open division title and 36 competing in the senior (ages 50-69) division or super senior (ages 70 and above) division.

The late Edward and Wilma Collins were the honorees for this year’s tournament. They were longtime members of the PG&CC. Eddie retired as an engineer for the Milwaukee Railroad, and Wilma retired as a tax consultant and legal secretary for the Willis and Sackett law firm. Several members of the Collins family were on hand during the closing ceremony of the tournament in honor of Eddie and Wilma.

In the senior division (ages 50 – 69), returning champion Steve Montgomery took the title again with a fine three-under total of 69 to edge Tim McKnight, who carded a 70.The super senior division (ages 70 and above) champion was John Brown, who shot an even par round of 72.
