A Perry man was arrested for allegedly harassing an officer of the Perry Police Department following his arrest for drunk driving Sunday.

George Enrique Gonzales, 46, of 2801 First Ave., Perry, was charged with assault on persons in certain occupations, first-degree harassment, first-offense OWI and speeding.

The incident began about 2 a.m. Sunday on southbound Iowa Highway 144 near Willis Avenue, where an officer of the Perry Police Department observed a 2013 Chevrolet pickup truck traveling in excess of the posted speed limit.

The officer initiated a traffic stop and made contact with Gonzales, who presented with “bloodshot and watery eyes” and “the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his person,” and “his speech was mumbled and slurred,” according to court records.

After failing several field sobriety tests, Gonzales was taken into custody on a charge of OWI.

Once inside the Perry Police Department, Gonzales allegedly pointed at an officer and said, “I am going to murder you,” according to court records.

Gonzales is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $10,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Oct. 1 in Dallas County District Court.

He was convicted of second-offense OWI in 2009 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of third or subsequent offense OWI in 2010 in Dallas County District Court.
