URBANDALE — Host Des Moines Christian erupted for a 29-5 lead after one quarter of action en route 68-39 win over Woodward-Granger in girls basketball action Friday.
The Lions won the WCC contest behind a decided advantage in size and by pushing the ball aggressively up the court. They held a 40-11 halftime lead and led, 55-21, after three quarters of play.
“DMC’s size and length gave us trouble,” W-G head coach Gary Dresback said. “They played a lot of 1-3-1 zone in the half court and their length allowed them to get in the passing lanes and deflect or steal numerous passes.”
Dresback said his team did not react quick enough in hustling back on defense, resulting in many transition points for the Lions while also forcing the Hawks into committing fouls, sending the hosts repeatedly to the foul line.
“This was a good lesson for us in understanding what it means to be ready to play and to be ready for the speed of the game,” he concluded.
Ebby Prewitt led DMC with 19 points, with Beth Zimmer adding 12.
Riley Jamison and Mary Hansen sank four 3-pointers apiece for the Hawks, with the former finishing with 14 points and the later with 12. Kendra Huismann added eight points and Emily Kuehl three, with two from Miranda Aunspach closing the scoring tally for W-G.
The W-G girls will have a rare Tuesday off next week and will not return to action until Friday when they host Van Meter for a boys/girls set.
Students and fans of both teams are being asked to wear red to the game for a “Red-out” as a show of support for hospitalized W-G junior Drew Jacobson, who remains in intensive care at a Des Moines hospital.
