HUXLEY — With six of their top seven players returning for a state-tournament qualifying team from last season, expectations are high for the Ballard girls cagers, and for good reason.
The Bombers improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Raccoon River Conference play Friday with a 49-36 win over a game, but outmatched, Perry squad. The loss drops the Jayettes to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in RRC play.
Gabie Doud’s 16 points led the hosts, who quickly posted a 14-8 lead after one period before taking a 30-18 advantage into the locker room.
Perry played with passion but could not close any ground in the third period and trailed, 41-26, entering the final frame. A 10-8 scoring edge in the remaining eight minutes was not nearly enough to draw even as the hosts claimed the 13-point victory.
Grace Marburger had a game-high 17 points for Perry, with Victoria Hegstrom adding nine points. Seven points from Taylor Lathrum and three from Alyssa Kruger capped the Jayette scoring. Additional statistical information was not available.
Perry hosts Norwalk Tuesday and Carroll Friday before completing the pre-holiday portion of their season with a girls-only visit from Des Moines Hoover Dec. 21.
