SOLON — The Woodward-Granger wrestlers made a trip east to Solon Jan. 14 and were handed a 48-22 loss by the hosts and a 38-34 setback by Maquoketa. Adding to a difficult evening was a bus breakdown on the trip home that delayed for several hours their arrival back in Woodward.
Four W-G matmen had pins against Maquoketa, with Austin Scharlau (160 pounds) winning in 4 minutes, 58 seconds and Tanner Vermaas (182) in 1:10 while Thomas Govig (195) won in 3:08 and Race Brant (152) in 1:34. Hunter Pierce recorded a 14-0 major decision at 106, with Ty Turner receiving a forfeit at 113.
Vermaas had a pin, in 1:46, against Solon, with Govig recording a pin in 2:54. Pierce notched a 12-3 major decision, with Turner winning a 7-5 decision and Brant a 4-3 decision.
W-G will visit Ogden for a quadrangular tonight and will then travel to Interstate-35 Saturday for a tournament.
