Welding teams from the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Perry VanKirk Career Academy took first and second places last week at the DMACC campus in Ankeny.
The first-place winners were three juniors from Madrid High School: Dylan Hansen, Talan Harrison and Parker Niemier.
Earning medals for taking second place was the team of three seniors from Woodward-Granger High School: Tory Santi, Daniel Johnson and Jake Yori.
“These are some very talented young men,” said Kyle Harding, welding instructor at the VanKirk DMACC in Perry. “We’re proud of them and how well they did in this year’s state competition.”
The Perry DMACC students were among about 400 high school and junior college students from across the state who vied for a chance to advance to the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, Ken., in June.
