ROLAND — Three members of the Perry softball team were named to the Roland-Story Kiwanis All-Tournament team after helping lead the Jayettes to a 4-0 mark in the event.

Pitcher Emma Olejniczak finished the tourney yielding only three runs on 18 total hits and five walks while striking out 35 in her four starts. Shortstop Jo Diw and second baseman Sid Vancil provided outstanding defense up the middle, with both wielding hot bats.

Perry (14-8) opened play Saturday with a 5-2 victory over Class 3A No. 7 Mount Vernon (19-7).

The Jayettes grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth when Diw and Vancil hit singles, with passed balls eventually allowing Diw to score.

Olejniczak singled in the top of the seventh, with a single by Maddy Jans and a walk to Brooke Huntington loaded the bases. Diw reached safely and Olejniczak scored on a throwing error toward the plate.

Vancil followed with a three-run double to widen the Jayette lead to 5-0.

It was fortunate for Perry she did, as Mount Vernon pushed two runs across the plate in their final at-bat to close the margin to 5-2, but could come no closer as the Jayettes shut the door to preserve the win.

Diw had a single and a stolen base and Vancil a single, a double and three RBIs. Olejniczak was 2-for-3, with Jans and Gabby West adding base hits.

Olejniczak allowed two runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out 10.

The final game in Roland was all Perry, as the Jayettes humbled Gilbert, 12-0, in four innings.

Olejniczak allowed only two hits and struck out six for her eighth shutout of the year.

Perry scored three times in the first frame, twice more in the second and four times in the third before ending the game early with three additional runs in the fourth inning.

Diw was 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs, with Vancil 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs, giving her a team-best 24 for the season. Vancil had five RBIs all of last year.

Alyssa Kruger aided the Perry attack with two RBIs and two steals on 2-for-2 hitting, with Rachel Kinney 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a steal. Jans, Huntington and Gabby West added a base hit apiece.

Perry was 5-5 two weeks ago, but has since won 9-of-12. The Jayettes are 12-2 outside the powerful Raccoon River Conference and 2-6 in RRC play. The conference currently boasts the top three teams in 4A, with Winterset, Carlisle and ADM holding down spots 1-2-3 while Boone is ranked 15th.

A trip to Winterset is on tap for Monday, with Clarke visiting Perry for a non-conference tilt Tuesday.
