WEST DES MOINES — City workers are capturing and diverting wastewater from a sewer pipe discharge near Jordan Creek and Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines, according to a statement released Thursday morning by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Jordan Creek flows easterly along the north side of E. P. True Parkway before entering Southwoods Park and the Raccoon River.
The leakage was discovered about 4 p.m. Wednesday and initially estimated at 10 gallons per minute, the DNR statement said. West Des Moines city workers stopped the discharge to the creek by rerouting wastewater through a new pipe shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday.
The city is investigating the cause of the sewer failure and plans to complete repairs today, according to the DNR.
Residents are advised to keep children and pets away from the stream for at least 48 hours after repairs are completed.
No dead fish or aquatic animals have yet been found below the discharge, said the DNR, which will continue to monitor the situation.
