WOODWARD — Last year the Earlham volleyball team did what no other team in the West Central Conference could do — win a set against Woodward-Granger. Class 2A No. 8 W-G suffered no such indignity Tuesday, sweeping Earlham, 3-0, on scores of 25-11, 25-16 and 25-15.
W-G (10-3, 2-0) was led by 11 kills from Olivia McCune, eight each from Mary Hansen and Bree Lesch, two from Ashley Gales and one each from Alyssa Bice and Julie Pitman. Gales and Hansen had two blocks apiece and Bice and Pitman once each, but the bigger story was McCune, who had four blocks.
Those four denials lifted her to 161 for her career and set a new school record, topping the old mark of 160 set by Abby Hansen in 2014.
Bice distributed 22 assists, with Kara Bodensteiner and Hansen providing three each while Riley Kirton added two assists and Lesch one.
Lesch led the squad with 12 idgs, with Hansen adding six and Bice and Bodensteiner five apiece. McCune had four digs, Gales and Pitman two each and Kaycee Major one.
Bodensteiner had three aces on 19-of-23 serving, with Bice 15-18-2, McCune 9-9-1 and Lesch 5-8-1 while Kirton was 9-of-9 and Hansen 3-of-4.
W-G is off Thursday but will return to the court Saturday when they travel to Eldridge for the North Scott Invitational.
