Perry harriers run the grounds in Jefferson Thursday

JEFFERSON — The Perry boys cross country team finished sixth and the Perry girls ninth in the Class AA division of the Greene County Invitational Thursday.

Winterset won the boys meet with 55 points, with Denison-Schleswig second at 70. Algona (75) was third, with Nevada (78), Kuemper Catholic (79), Perry (178), Creston (180) and Boone (228) completing the field.

Malachi Hornbuckle of Nevada crossed in 17 minutes, 13.77 seconds to win individual honors, with Kuemper’s Ben Grote the runner-up in 17:19.87.

Perry junior Juma Bushiri was 20th in his first varsity competition with a clocking of 19:03.01. Junior Zach Thompson was 26th in 19:21.89 and senior Dane McCarty 43rd in 20:46.02 while junior Zach Stewart was 44th in 20:50.32 and sophomore Mario Cruz 45th in 21:11.9. Arron Lockwood (49th, 22:08.52) and Hayen McFarland (50th, 22:10.12) did not have their placings used for the team total.

Jacob Prombo, Gabe Ridnour, Gerardo Gonzalez, Beau Nelson, Ben Stika, Eduardo Sanchez and Miguel Gonzalez were the unscored second group of seven running for Perry.

Denison-Schleswig had the 1-2-4-11-12 finishers to easily win the girls title with 30 points. Winterset was second at 54 points, with Algona (105), Creston (121), Nevada (142), Greene County (178), Kuemper (191), Boone (197) and Perry (201) also posting team scores.

Junior Grace Stewart was 16th for Perry in 22:45.59, with freshmen Molly Lutmer and Hannah Peterson 42 and 44th, respectively, in 25:21.4 and 26:18.3. Senior Joselyn Carrillo finished 45th in 26:24.94, with junior Julissa Calderon 54th in 27:52.57. Junior Darian McCord (27:57.26) and senior Alejandra Rivera (28:26.29) were not scored.

Also running for the Jayettes were McKinley Thompson, Sophie Prombo, Angela Hernandez, Kyla Devilbiss, Kat Munoz, Andrea Cortes and Alondra Avila.

Class A and Class AA were combined for junior high two-mile races for both the boys and girls.

Denison-Schleswig won a tiebreaker to top WCV for team honors at 80 points. Perry was 11th in the 12-team field with 256 points.

Tyler Devilbiss was 14th in 13:48.88, David Roberts 50th in 16:16.6 and Andrew Galindo 62nd in 17:23.39, with Tanner Burgin 63rd in 17:27.41 and Kyle Lockwood 67th in 18:28.31. Galindo and Lockwood are eighth graders, the others are in grade seven.

The Jayettes had only three runners and thus could not generate a team score in a race dominated by Panorama’s 41 points as the Panthers placed 1-2-8-9-21.

Seventh graders Jaylene Karolus (16:50.62) and Ashley Macias (19:23.12) were joined by eighth-grader Amy McNamara (19:59.63) in running for Perry.

Perry will compete at the Ballard Invitational in Huxley Monday and will then be off until a Sept. 20 visit to the Newton Invite.
