WOODWARD — Class 2A No. 8 Woodward-Granger made quick work of visiting Madrid Tuesday in speeding to a 3-0 win in West Central Conference play.
W-G (18-6, 4-0) recorded the sweep in impressive fashion, winning by scores of 25-7, 25-3 and 25-10, respectively. The host Hawks had long, extended runs, including a 12-point stretch in the first set and a 20-0 run to start the second set, with Riley Kirton and Kara Bodensteiner, respectively, serving during the scoring string. Of the 20 total points scored by Madrid, five came on service errors and five others on kill attempts hit out-of-bounds.
Bodensteiner had seven aces on 31-of-31 serving, with Mary Hansen 8-of-8 with three aces and Alyssa Bice 7-7-2. Olivia McCune was 5-7-1 and Bree Lesch 4-7-1 with Kirton perfect on all 12 of her attempts behind the line.
Lesch led the squad with 12 kills, with McCune adding 10 and Hansen six while Julie Pitman provided four kills, Ashley Gales two and Bice one. Hansen distributed 14 assists and Bice 12, with Lesch adding three and Kaycee Major two.
Bodensteiner’s 10 digs were a team-high, with Hansen tallying seven digs, Lesch four and Bice and Major three apiece. McCune finished with two blocks and Bice with one.
Tuesday’s match was celebrated as Cancer Awareness Night, with “Mama Said Knock You Out!” (a reference to an LL Cool J rap from 1990) the theme. A free will omelet dinner was held in the W-G cafeteria, with numerous items raffled off, t-shirts and cookies sold and pledges taken based on the number of ace serves the Hawks would have in the match (the team finished with 14).
W-G will return to action Tuesday with a visit from AC/GC for a WCC match.
