DES MOINES — Tuesday’s trip to Des Moines North began with a confident and hopeful team eager to prove to themselves what they could when matched against teams that could not simply outnumber, and thus, outpoint, them. The return trip to Perry was a likely a wee bit raucous, and for good reason.

Perry visited Des Moines North to swim against both the host Polar Bears and the Huskies from Des Moines Hoover in a triple-dual, a format in which each team is scored separately against the other two and not as a single three-team result.

The outcome had Perry topping North, 52-39, and Hoover, 49.5-39.5, while North was a 48-43 victor over Hoover.

The Jayettes were able to ring the victory bell at Perry High School for a double-win thanks to victories in nine of 11 events, with three swimmers recording new personal-best (PB) times along the way.

The foursome of Sarah and Haley Vaughn, Breanna Penenger and Avery Miner beat North, and tied Hoover, for first place with a clocking of 2 minutes, 17.55 seconds. Both Vaughn sisters, Anna Ridnour and Dannah Karolus were first against both opponents in the 200 free relay in 1:59.23, with Sarah Vaughn, Miner, Karolus and Penenger first against both foes in the 400 free relay in 4:29.78.

Ridnour used a personal-best 2:24.01 to score a double-win in the 200 free, with Haley Vaughn and Penenger finishing 1-2 and 1-2 (against North, and Hoover, respectively) in the 200 individual medley in 2:29.77 and a PB effort of 2:43.09.

Karolus finished 1-2 in the 50 free in 29.49, with Sarah Vaughn 2-2 in the 100 butterfly in 1:17.97 while Karolus was 2-2 in 1:07.01 and Miner 3-3 in 1:11.83 in the 100 free.

Penenger had a double-win in the 500 free in 6:14.46, with Miner 2-1 in the 100 backstroke in 1:24.1.

Haley Vaughn recorded a PB of 1:18.33 to place 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke while Ridnour was 3-3 in the event in 1:29.06.

Perry will return to North’s pool for the Polar Bear Invitational Saturday, but first up is a triple-dual Thursday at Indianola, with Osklaoosa also present.
