
KNOXVILLE — The Perry volleyball team followed a 1-2 record in pool play with a pair of consecutive wins in consolation bracket play to finish fifth at the Knoxville Invitational Saturday.
Perry (7-25) opened play with a 21-18, 2-13 loss to Iowa Falls-Alden before defeating Knoxville, 21-9 and 21-15. Pella Christian stopped Perry, 21-7 and 21-6, with the Jayettes rebounding to knock off Saydel, 21-10 and 21-15. That set up a return bout against Knoxville, which Perry claimed with a 21-19 and 21-14 victory for fifth place.
LaPorte City-Union defeated IF-A for the team title. ADM and Albia were also in action at the tourney.
The Jayettes used their 3-2 mark to improve to 7-25 overall on the season, with three wins over Knoxville and two over Saydel, along with wins over CMB and Panorama.
Jo Diw’s total of 36 combined kills led the Perry offense in the invite. Grace Marburger had 12 kills, Adrian Thompson eight, Isabel Saemisch seven, Sid Vancil six, Gabby West three and Maddie West one.
Vancil provided 44 assists, Maddie West six and Mackenzie Ayers four, with Saemisch and Syd Guerra tallying two assists apiece and Marburger one.
Marburger (33), Diw (31) and Guerra (30) led the defense in total digs, with Vancil making 12 digs, Maddie West four, and Saemisch and Thompson one each. Thompson had three blocks and Marburger two, with Diw and Vancil recording one block apiece.
Vancil served 34-of-35 with six aces, with Guerra 37-38-3 and Marburger 32-36-3. Maddie West was 22-24-1, Diw 20-24-4 and Thompson 7-10-1, with Gabby West 3-4-1 and Saemisch 0-for-1.
Perry will conclude their regular season with a visit to Greene County tonight. They will travel to Bondurant-Farrar Wednesday for a first round game in Class 4A Region 4 that will begin at 7 p.m. The winner will play at Nevada Oct. 25.
