Catchy costumes brought smiles and laughter at the Woodward Community Center Sunday during the town's annual Beggars' Night festivities.

Perry’s Friday night frights were hardly over before howls of Halloween delight were filling the streets of Dawson, Rippey and Woodward this weekend, as candy-loving youngsters and their parents enjoyed a variety of community-sponsored events.

In Dawson, the city provided its annual Halloween hayrides and other fun and games for the kids Sunday. Tables in the Dawson Community Center were laid out with generous helpings of chili and a variety of treats, such as popcorn balls and cupcakes, to top things off. A Halloween photo spot was also available to preserve the memories.

The Rippey Library hosted a Car-toberfest Saturday, with about 50 vintage automobiles pleasing the motoring connoisseurs and a host of games at hand for the youngsters, from bean bag tossing and balloon-popping dart boards to face painting and pumpkin painting. Chili and several soups were served, and baked goods were also available alongside the bingo tables. The Disney classic “Hocus Pocus” was screened in the evening.

Woodward’s annual Beggars’ Night started at 6 p.m. Sunday, with the Woodward Lion’s Club offering hot dogs and chips in the Community Center and the Woodward Public Safety Department handing out sweets to the goblins and ghosts passing the fire station. Many homeowners also had elaborate yard decorations to attract the little beggars, who came out in droves with their parents as dusk began to fall.

The Perry-area frights continue Monday when Halloween festivities will be staged youngsters in Adel, De Soto and Minburn and in Dallas Center and Grimes. Van Meter children will also celebrate Halloween Monday.
