SAYDEL — With scoring from throughout the lineup, the Woodward-Granger girls posted a 41-27 win over Saydel in non-conference play Monday.
After six minutes each team had scored only two points apiece, but Kendra Husmann came off the bench to sink a pair of baskets, with a 3-pointer from Riley Jamison pushing the score to 9-2 after one frame. At half the score stood at 19-12, with a 10-5 burst in the third frame opening a 29-17 lead for the Hawks, who finished off the win from there.
W-G head coach Gary Dresback praised the defensive effort of this team.
“On a night where our main scorers didn’t shoot very well, we played well defensively and slowly stretched out a 19-point lead by the last part of the fourth quarter, when we were playing quite a few subs,” he said. “Saydel scored five late points to make it a 14-point game that wasn’t really as close as it appeared on the board. They just aren’t very capable offensively, and we were just good enough offensively to get a comfortable win.”
Husmann had nine points and Jamison and Mary Hansen six each while Alyssa Bice had five points. Kayley Dresback and Kaitlyn Peters each provided four points, with Maggi Mallon adding three points, Riley Kirton two and Natalie Helbling two.
Hansen had seven rebounds, with Mallon and Kirton each clearing four boards. Hansen also led the team with five steals, with Husmann and Jamison making two thefts each.
W-G will host Van Meter Friday for a WCC girl/boy set, with the first game to start at 6 p.m.
