
BONDURANT — The Woodward-Granger matmen continued the strong start to their season Thursday with a solid outing against Ballard and host Bondurant-Farrar. The Hawks opened with a 40-34 win over the homestanding Bluejays before finishing on the short end of a 45-30 result against the Bombers.
W-G senior Tanner Vermaas made school history with a pair of wins, sending the 182-pounder to the top of the career victory list with 126 triumphs. The previous mark of 124 was held by Jack Manning. Vermaas pinned Jacob Hayworth (B-F) in 2 minutes, 31 seconds for the record-breaking win before posting a 5-3 win over Ben Lee (BAL).
Junior Austin Scharlau was 2-0 at 152 with a pin of B-F’s Shawn Glaser in 1:24 and a 3-0 decision over Ballard’s Ben Hokel, with Tate Lettow (120 pounds) 2-0 with pins of Aiden Lewis (B-F) in 3:11 and of Tim Lang (BAL) in 3:39. Also posting two wins by pinfall was Gabe Yingst (145), who stuck Brandon Renaud (B-F) in 57 seconds and Josh Borg (BAL) in 1:12.
Five Hawks finished with 1-1 records Thursday, including 126-pounder Colt Palmer, who pinned Ballard’s Mitchell McMillern in 58 ticks and 138-pounder Cole Carman, who scored a 13-4 major decision over B-F’s Kaeden Lozano.
Cody Fisher pinned Ballard’s Sam Andrews in 2:55 at 195 and Tyler Lawernson stuck B-F’s Scott Hutchinson in 4:40 at 220, with Alex Kirton putting B-F’s Kolt Pitzen’s shoulders to the mat in 1:45 at heavyweight.
The Hawks will host the West Central Conference duals Saturday. Six WCC schools compete in wrestling, and each will be in action against all five of their opponents. The start time has been moved to 10 a.m.
