The National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines has warned travelers that dense fog with visibility from one-quarter mile to zero at times has developed early Sunday morning along a warm front stretching across central Iowa.
The fog will tend to move with the boundary through the morning hours, with a brief one-hour to three-hour period of low visibility expected, the NWS said.
Persons traveling on Christmas morning should be on the lookout for rapidly changing conditions.
Warmer temperatures and southeast winds increasing to 20 to 30 mph will help to disperse the fog once the warm front lifts north of this area, the NWS said. The fog is then likely to move into northern Iowa though the late morning and early afternoon hours.
Motorists should slow down if dense fog is encountered. The NWS advises drivers to use low
beam and fog headlights and to leave plenty of distance ahead of their vehicles. Drivers should be especially cautious near intersections and railroad crossings.
