
PANORA — Des Moines Christian stunned then-No. 6 Panorama, 50-39, Jan. 10 in West Central Conference play. The loss was the first of the season for the Panther girls, who fell to 11th in the most recent Class 2A polls.
Panorama bounced back with a 56-34 win over visiting West Central Valley Friday before scoring a 51-34 non-conference win over visiting Nodaway Valley Saturday. The Panthers improved to 13-1 overall and 9-1 in WCC play with a 74-40 win at Earlham Tuesday, but statistical information from the victory was unavailable.
PANORAMA 51, NODAWAY VALLEY 34
Bailey Beckman scored a game-high 22 points while grabbing seven rebounds and making seven steals to the lead the hosts over a good Wolverine team, who fell to 9-3 with the loss.
The Panther defense suffocated their guests for a scoreless first quarter while putting 13 points on the board. The hosts held a 22-13 lead at the half and a 41-29 margin after three frames to cruise to the win.
Morgan Johnk had 14 points and six rebounds for the Panthers, with Devyn Kemble adding nine points and five boards, Faith Powell four points, four rebounds and three steals and Hope Wilderman two points. Powell helped key the offense with a personal season-high eight assists.
Panorama was 10-of-10 at the foul line in the win, with Nodaway Valley 8-of-11.
Josie Clark had 15 points, Paige McElfish 10, Annie Herr seven and Jodie Baudler two for the guests. Clark blocked four shots and grabbed seven rebounds, with McElfish clearing 12 caroms while Baudler made three assists.
PANORAMA 56, WEST CENTRAL VALLEY 34
The Panthers raced to an early 12-4 lead and entered the intermission with a 25-10 advantage in dispatching the Wildcats.
Nine players scored for the home team, with Beckman hitting for 14 points and Johnk and Powell for 11 apiece. Wilderman added six points and Kemble and Kellie Prince four apiece while Nicole Rolfes, Maddie Knapp and Lydia Knapp each scored two points.
WCV was led by Kristin Culp, Jennifer Dudley and Grace Dupuy, with each scoring eight points. Culp led the team with five rebounds, with Dupuy grabbing four.
DES MOINES CHRISTIAN 50, PANORAMA 39
The Lions downed the Panthers for the fifth time in their last seven meetings with an 11-point win that avenged a 45-42 Panorama win in Urbandale Nov. 29.
DMC turned the tables on Panorama by being the team that surged to a fast start, surprising their hosts with an 18-9 first quarter blitz. The score stood at 26-18 at the half and 36-26 after three frames as the hosts simply could not make up their early deficit, with the Lions holding on for the 50-39 win.
The Lions sank 13-of-19 free throws and were led by 12 points from Beth Zimmer, with Olivia Penland adding nine points and Alayna Bakke eight points.
Kemble paced Panorama with 16 points. Beckman had eight points and Johnk seven, with four points form Prince and four from Powell closing the scoring ledger. Johnk pulled down eight rebounds and Powell four, with Kemble making five steals.
The hosts were 15-of-23 at the line in the loss, their first setback after starting the season with a 10-game winning streak.
Panorama visits AC/GC Friday before traveling to No. 6 Van Meter Monday for a rescheduled contest. The Panthers host Madrid Tuesday and will then entertain Van Meter Jan. 27.
