The Dallas County Farm Bureau offices in Adel will host Stroke Detection Plus, a Des Moines vascular screening company, for discount screenings and EKGs Thursday, Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Stroke Detection Plus will conduct ultrasound screenings for Farm Bureau members and others. The screenings include stroke screening, abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial disease and osteoporosis. They will also offer an EKG for those who sign up.
The cost of the screenings to Farm Bureau members will be $100 for all four screenings, plus $35 for the EKG add on. The non-member price will be $170.
Atrial fibrillation puts you at five times greater risk of suffering a stroke. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is the most common type of irregular heartbeat. It occurs when one or both of the upper chambers of the heart – called the atria – don’t beat the way they should.
AFib can cause blood to pool in the left atrium, where a blood clot can form. If that clot breaks away, it can travel to the brain, where it can cause a type of stroke called an ischemic — pronounced is-KEE-mic — stroke.
It is estimated that AFib affects more than 2 million people in the United States. The odds of developing AFib increase with age, and the American Heart Association says AFib is the most common type of irregular heartbeat in people over the age of 65.
Stroke Detection Plus’s simple EKG screening can detect AFib before it causes a stroke. The EKG screening is a $35 add on. A comparable test in the hospital setting costs up to $1200.
To schedule an appointment, call Stroke Detection Plus at 1-877-732-8258 and tell them you are a Farm Bureau member in order to save $35 on all four of the screenings. The Dallas County Farm Bureau offices are located at 112 Nile Kinnick Dr. S. in Adel.
