WOODWARD — Arms were raised in triumph, tears were shed in frustration and valuable experience gained at the annual Duane Harney Invitational at the Woodward-Granger High School Sunday.
The morning session had grapplers in grades 5-8 competing, with those as young as five years old through fourth grade taking to the mats just before noon. Organizers estimate well over 200 aspiring mat stars were in competition.
Registrations were filled so quickly the tourney was closed to entrants early last week, and a sign on the door warned latecomers that “no walk-ins” would be allowed.
Named for longtime W-G mat coach and local wrestling promoter Duane Harney, the event is hosted by the Beaver Creek wrestlers.
