Panorama wrestlers third at AC/GC Invitational

GUTHRIE CENTER — Panorama had one wrestler climb atop the podium and two others stand in second place to help spark a third-place showing at the Charger Invite Saturday.

Clarion-Goldfield’s 169.5 points won the event, with Van Meter second at 156. Panorama placed third with 147 points, with Underwood fourth at 130 and Woodward-Granger fifth at 128 to round out the top five in the 22-team meet.

Tyler Van Houten won the 152-pound title for the Panthers, with George Appleseth second at 132 and Gunnar Grunsted second while wrestling up a class at 170 pounds. Seven other Panorama matmen earned placings, building up team points to help create the strong overall finish.

Van Houten (45-3) began his quest with a pin of Korbin Martin (AHSTWO in 1 minute, 48 seconds, with a 10-1 major decision over Cole Sackett (WCV) and a 5-1 decision against Caleb Button of Van Meter sent the Panther senior into the finals. He won the top spot with a 9-3 decision against Southeast Warren’s Alec Henderson.

Appleseth (38-7) is currently ranked seventh at 126 pounds, but wrestled Saturday — as he has been of late — at 132. Falls against Jayden Dorenkamp (W-G) in 1:08, and against Shawn Swain of Griswold in 3:41, led to a 9-1 major decision over Trey Lawrence of Southeast Valley. He lost, 2-1, in Tiebreaker 1 to SEW’s Blake Bauer, who is ranked seventh at 132.

Grunsted (38-9) used a 6-4 decision over Gavyn Fischer (AHSTW) and a Sudden Victory 1 (3-1) win over Reid Steinberg of NW Webster to reach the finals in his weight class. He placed second after suffering a 7-2 loss to 43-1 Kyler Fisher of SE Valley, who is rated third at 182 pounds.

Dalton Holmes (39-8) responded to a 3-2 Ultimate Tiebreaker loss to Erik Jorgensen (AHSTW) in the quarterfinals to place third at 195 pounds. He came through the consolation bracket with a pin of Tyler Erdman (VM) in 1:57 and a 5-4 Tiebreaker 1 win over SEW’s Alex Hommer to reach the third-place match, where claimed a 4-3 decision against Beau Boswell of East Union.

Noah Kirtley (28-18 at 126) and Trevor Carey (29-19 at 182) each placed fourth for the Panthers, with Danny Nordquist (33-13 at 120) finishing fifth. Placing sixth for Panorama were both Brady Howard (29-20 at 220) and Dan Jensen (22-17 at 285) while Kaleb Stogdill (27-22 at 145) finished in seventh place.

Panorama left the 106, 113, 138 and 160 pound weight classes open.
