The Growing Food and Profit group, a collection of local food growers in and around Dallas County, will meet Feb. 13 at the First Presbyterian Church, 1204 13th St.  in Dallas Center.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the group’s customary pot luck dinner. The presentation will start at 7 p.m., featuring Linda Nelson of Dallas Center, coordinator of Growing Food and Profit and former director of the Dallas County office of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, who will lead a discussion of seed germinating and transplanting.

“My husband, Joel Myers, and I have been starting many of our plants from seed for several years,” Nelson said. “Last year we attended a transplant workshop at the ISU Extension office in Fort Dodge and have put to use several ideas that we learned at that workshop. We will share what we have learned and put into practice as a result of the workshop as well as our experiences with growing transplants over the years.”

Nelson said attendees should bring along seeds that they know they will not be using this year or in the future so they can be laid out for others to see whether there are any they can use.

“We don’t claim to be experts,” Nelson said. “And we would hope that those of you who have been growing transplants will be willing to share what you have learned.”

As always, visitors will have an opportunity to reflect on some of their favorite vegetable varieties and talk about their past performance and perceived advantages.

Anyone interested in growing or eating locally grown food is welcome to attend the Growing Food and Profit meeting. Bring a potluck dish to share and your own table service. Coffee will be provided.
