W-G girls win battle of Hawks in post season opener

WOODWARD — A quick start and steady pace helped send Woodward-Granger into the win column for the eighth time this season after the host Hawks handed the visiting Hawks of South Hamilton a 54-38 loss in Class 2A Region 4 action Saturday.

W-G (8-14) finished the first quarter with a 17-11 lead and extended their margin to 32-21 at the break. Any hopes South Hamilton (2-20) may have had for an upset disappeared in the third period, with a 12-5 scoring spurt giving W-G a 44-26 lead with eight minutes remaining.

Riley Jamison had 15 points, Maggi Mallon 11 and Kendra Husmann 10 for W-G. Eight points from Mary Hansen, four from Alyssa Bice and two apiece from Kayley Dresback, Riley Kirton and Lisa Pitman accounted for the W-G offense.

Statistics from South Hamilton were not available.

The win sends W-G into a Tuesday contest at No. 10 Van Meter. The game will begin at 7 p.m., with the victor playing, in Van Meter at 7 p.m. Friday against the winner of Tuesday’s game between Des Moines Christian and Earlham.

W-G 41, AC/GC 33

WOODWARD — W-G capped their regular season with a 41-33 win over AC/GC in West Central Conference play Tuesday. W-G finished 5-11 in WCC play, with AC/GC 4-17 overall and 3-13 in league play.

The Hawks held a 22-19 halftime lead, and while only scoring five points in the third period held the Chargers to only four to enter the fourth quarter leading 27-23.

Hanson and Husmann had 13 points apiece for the hosts, with Jamison providing seven points, Dresback six and Mallon two.

Morgan Meacham scored eight points, Madison Berger seven and Savana Fuller and Olivia Laabs six apiece for AC/GC. Leighan Laughery’s five points and a LeAnna Stringer free throw capped the Charger attack.
