CLASS 1A STATE TOURNAMENT -- Panorama junior Gunnar Grunsted (left) scored a 3-2 win over HLV's Kenneth Kriegel in their first round battle at 170 pounds.

DES MOINES — Panorama’s Tyler Van Houten  (152 pounds) and Gunnar Grunsted  (170) both lost by fall in today’s Class 1A Quarterfinals, but both joined teammate George Appleseth (132) in winning a second round consolation match to insure a spot on the state tournament podium Saturday night.

Van Houten pinned Brennan Swafford of Mediapolis in 3 minutes, 32 seconds to remain alive, with Grunsted sticking Maquoketa Valley’s Norman Wilson to advance while Appleseth won a 4-3 decision against Garrett Arment of Woodbury Central.

All three are assured of at least eighth place and could finish as high as third. The trio will compete at 7:30 p.m. in the 1A third round consolations.

It is the first time in school history for the Panthers to finish with three place winners at the same state tournament.
