A major change in the weather is coming to Iowa within the next 24 hours, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Des Moines.

After several consecutive days of record and near-record high temperatures in the 60s and 70s, a winter storm is now setting its sights on Iowa. Temperatures will play a large role in this weather event, the NWS said Wednesday evening.

South-central to southern Iowa will likely see rain, and northern Iowa will likely see snow.

Snowfall amounts in northwestern Iowa in the 6 inch to 10 inch range or more are expected. Central portions of the state appear to be in for 1 inch to 3 inches of snow.

Impacts will be largely driven by winds from the northwest, which are forecast at 20 to 30mph, with gusts to 35 mph. Blowing and drifting snow will reduce visibility to less than 1 mile during periods of heavier snow.

If you have travel plans across the north-central to northern portion of Iowa, now is the time to start making alternate plans as travel may become very hazardous.
