WINTERSET — Perry scored in the final seconds of the first half, then added a second score in the second half to post an important 2-1 win over host Winterset Tuesday.
Bluejay head coach Gary Overla had warned before the start of the season that a talented Husky squad was expected to be a sound test in the Raccoon River Conference for two-time defending champion Perry, and Tuesday’s battle on the pitch proved his concerns valid.
The hosts scored in the 36th minute to grab a 1-0 lead, but Alex Castaneda found the back of the net with five ticks remaining on the clock to knot the score entering the intermission.
Perry kept a strong Husky offense at bay in the second half, with German Alvarenga’s goal in the 62nd minute proving to be the game winner.
“This was a great defensive effort tonight from the Bluejays,” Overla said.
Perry boasts a freshman class loaded with promise — even by Bluejay standards — and those youngsters, mixed with older players, has created a potent junior varsity squad. The unit had no trouble at all Tuesday, sailing to a 9-1 victory.
Another solid challenge awaits Perry Thursday, as the team will travel to face RRC foe Carlisle.
