Panorama boys place third at state golf tourney

FORT DODGE — Clear Lake fired combined rounds of 301-300–601 to edge Kuemper Catholic (304-300–604) by three strokes to win the Class 2A Boys State Golf Tournament at Lakeside Golf Course Saturday.

Panorama was third with a score of 304-303–607 while first-round leader Sheldon — who shot 294 Friday — struggled to a 314 Saturday to finish fourth at 608. Clarinda (309-309–618), Shenandoah (310-315–625), New Hampton (317-312–629), Clayton Ridge (324-332–656) and Wilton (339-333–672) completed the field.

Panorama seniors Will Babcock and George Appleseth led the team Friday with identical rounds of 72, with freshman Kolby Shackelford (73) and sophomore Trey Cobb (87) also scoring. Sophomore Dylan Douglass (95) and senior Mitchell Wagler (96) were also in action.

Babcock shot 70 Saturday, with Appleseth and Shackelford each cardinga 75. Wagler cut 13 strokes off his day one round to score on day two with an 83. Cobb (86) and Douglass (89) did not have their scores used for the team total.

New Hampton’s Carter Stochl was the overall individual medalist with his 72-68–140 while Babcock (72-70–142) tied with Ryan Ruzek of Shenandoah (71-71–152) and Dylan Ellis of Aplington-Parkersburg (72-70–142) for runner-up honors.

Appleseth finished tied for 10th with his 72-75–147, with Shackelford 13th at 73-75–148. Cobb (87-86–173) was 54th and Wagler (96-83–179) 58th while Douglass (95-89–184) was 62nd overall.
