W-G strolls to win in WCAC opener

STUART — Woodward-Granger won their 25th consecutive West Central Activities Conference volleyball match by sweeping host West Central Valley Tuesday. The Hawks (4-3, 1-0) prevailed on finals of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-7, dropping the Wildcats to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Alissa Smeltzer had nine kills and two blocks for W-G, with Anna Tague adding eight kills, Ashley Gales six kills and five blocks, Alyssa Bice three kills, Natalie Weaver one kill and Emma Drake two blocks.

Drake distributed 15 assists and Bice 10, with Katelyn Bandstra and Ashlyn Soelberg provided four digs apiece while Kaycee Major had three digs and Smeltzer two.

The Hawks served up 21 aces in the three matches, led by Tague, who was 11-of-13 with five aces. Drake finished 17-18-4, with Smeltzer 6-9-4 while Soelberg was 11-12-3, Bandstra 11-13-3, Bice 3-4-1 and Major 2-4-1.

Madison Wadell was 7-10-4 to pace WCV behind the line, with Sydney Neal making four kills while Haley Nizzi provided seven digs.

W-G competes today in the ADM tournament, beginning with a match against Perry in the south gym at 4:30 p.m. Earlham hosts W-G Tuesday, with the Hawks making their annual trip to the North Scott Tournament Sept. 9.
