Junior Jay tourney draws big crowd

The annual Junior Jay Youth Wrestling Tournament occupied both the Perry Senior High and Middle School gyms Sunday, with over 160 young grapplers participating.

A total of 39 four-person brackets were offered, with many brackets have a fifth wrestler involved. Ages ranged from kindergarten through middle school, with youngsters from as far as a four-drive away making the trek to Perry.

Local organizers believed between 20-25 Junior Jays were involved the tourney. The welcome trend of young girls being drawn to the sport continued this year as ponytails were evident in more than a few brackets.

The Junior Jays compete on Sundays at numerous events each season. Perry volunteer coaches attend specific events, which are announced at the start of the year. Junior Jays can opt to wrestle at a non-listed event, but will not receiving coaching help at such meets.
