PANORA — Woodward Academy used a strong third quarter to erase a halftime deficit and defeat host Panorama in WCAC boys cage action Friday.
Panorama (1-9, 1-8) trailed, 18-15, after the first eight minutes but were able to outscore their guests, 18-10, in the second period to hold a 33-28 halftime advantage.
Woodward Academy (5-4, 5-4) came out of the intermission on fire, scoring 19 of the next 21 points in the game to suddenly surge to a 47-35 lead, with the hosts facing a 56-46 hole as the fourth quarter started. The Knights slowly widened the gap as the last minutes wound down to claim the 17-point win.
The Knights finished 13-of-22 at the foul line, with the Panthers attempting just seven free throws, sinking five.
Qwame Davis had 25 points and Mike Barker 22 for the Academy, with Rob Salley adding 15 points.
Gracen Welberg led Panorama with 13 points, with Malachi Peasley hitting four 3-pointers for 12 points while Zac Rizzuti tallied 10 points. Eight points from Jacob Merschman, seven from Luke South, three from Blaine Barber and two from Michael Allen closed the scoring list.
Panorama visits Des Moines Christian Tuesday and West Central Valley Friday. Both Panther teams will also visit Nodaway Valley Jan. 13, with the girls game beginning at 4 p.m.
