A series of special events were held during Friday’s basketball contests between Ballard and host Perry, including a reunion of many members of the 1988 Class 2A State Champion Bluejay cagers.

Perry had appeared in the 1987 tournament, opening with a 70-63 win over Maquoketa. A 72-67 loss in to Cedar Rapids Regis in the semifinals dropped Perry to the consolation finals, where the Jays placed fourth after a 70-49 setback to Audubon.

The Bluejays played their way back to the state tourney the following season, topping Western Christian (Hull), 85-79, and Washington, 68-63, to reach the finals. Perry claimed the top prize by easily dismissing Council Bluffs St. Albert, 76-60. The Falcons had reached the title game with a 56-53 win over Cedar Rapids LaSalle, which, a few years later, would merge with Regis to create CR Xavier.

Brenna Peel (left) and Brenee Herrick, daughters of the late Tom Schleicher, addressed the crowd between games Friday on their experiences of dealing with having a loved one contract Alzheimer’s disease.

The team was coached by the late Tom Schleicher. In honor of Schleicher’s memory, the night was also themed “Alzheimer’s Night” with an information booth providing materials on the disease. As one American will contract the disease, on average, every 66 seconds, a bucket brigade fundraiser lasting that length was held.

Several members of the title-winning team, including assistant coach Mike Jorgensen, were introduced between games, along with several cheerleaders, statisticians and family members.

With their mother Nancy part of the attentive crowd, Schleicher’s daughters Brenee Herrick and Brenna Peel shared memories of their father, his love for the Bluejays and Perry and his battle with Alzheimer’s.

Members of late head coach Tom Schleicher’s family, along with cheerleaders and statisticians from the 1988 state championship team, gather between games Friday.

Fans were able to try 3-point baskets at halftime of both games for a $1 donation, with those making the long shots winning a six-inch sandwich from Subway. At halftime of the boys game a half-court contest was held, with a Subway party platter awarded to the first made shot.

Jayette sophomore guard Molly Lutmer ended any drama early, winning the prize by draining her shot, only the second one attempted.

A total of $2,590 was raised and will be donated to help research on Alzheimer’s.

Perry was a 74-59 winner in the boys game after falling, 38-24, in the girls contest. Both teams will host Boone Tuesday before visiting Bondurant-Farrar Friday.
