When you receive your new Medicare card, right, shred or cut to pieces your old card, left. Outwit the scammers: Do not pay anyone for a Medicare card, and do not give your Social Seciurity number to any phone caller

Starting in January, Medicare started mailing new cards to all currently enrolled members of the federal health insurance program.

The new cards are intended to help protect the identity of members, and the cards no longer contain Social Security Number (SSN).

The Dallas County Hospital has provided Medicare members the following safety tips:

1. Watch for your new Medicare card arriving soon by mail.

2. Be sure to destroy your old card that currently has your social security number on it right away.

3. Make sure to bring your new card to every appointment. Healthcare facilities are aware of this change and ready to accept your new card.

4. Beware of individuals contacting you about your new card. Treat your new card number as you would your Social Security or credit card numbers. Remember that Medicare will never contact you uninvited to ask for your personal information.
