Dallas County Sheriff Chad Leonard announced Tuesday his office will start offering online weapons permit applications and renewals July 1.
Online applications will be the only way future gun permit are processed, Leonard said, as is already successfully done in other large counties in Iowa.
He said applicants will be able to apply from home or by using the county kiosk in the lobby of the Dallas County Sheriff’s office at 201 Nile Kinnick Dr. N. in Adel.
“When the weapons permitting law changed in 2011, we saw a large influx of applicants for the five-year carry permit,” Leonard said. “This means that in 2016 there will be the same large numbers for renewals. We wanted to get this process out early so that applicants can familiarize themselves with the easy, online process and hopefully reduce the amount of driving and time waiting for our citizens in processing those applications in the future.”
The sheriff’s office will no longer accept paper applications after July 1. All applicants must apply online or use the sheriff’s lobby kiosk.
“This software has some interesting features as well,” Leonard said, “in that it can send you a text message, a voice message or an email notifying you that your permit is ready for pickup. We are always looking for efficiency in county government, and we believe that this is one improvement that will benefit our citizens and our office.”
Details for the application process are available on the Dallas County Sheriff’s website. Applicants will simply click the “weapons permit” button on the homepage. The new feature will be live starting July 1
Further details are also available on the county’s How do I? – Weapons Permits” tab as well. For more information or to comment on the new system, call the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office at 515-993-4771.
