Sixth-ranked Winterset burst to a 2-0 lead en route to claiming a 3-1 win over Perry in Raccoon River Conference boys soccer at Dewey Field Tuesday.

The win lifts Winterset to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in RRC play while Perry fell to 4-3, 3-1. Neither team has yet to play undefeated ADM, but in the always-tough RRC a single loss has often proved deadly toward league title chances, a crown Perry has claimed four of the past five seasons.

Winterset scored on a breakaway off what Perry head coach Gary Overla termed “a defensive breakdown” in the ninth minute, then pushed the score to 2-0 at the break with a curving, wind-aided goal in the 32nd minute.

Mario Saldana scored an unassisted goal for Perry in the second half but it was not enough to stop the Huskies from claiming victory.

“The first half was not a very good one,” Overla said of his squad’s effort. “We could not connect passes, our timing was off and we could not get things going. We were simply outplayed in the first half.”

Perry will travel to face Greene County (6-3) tonight. The match will be played at Karber Field in Grand Junction, former home site for East Greene football and track.

Perry will host their twice-postponed tournament Saturday at Dewey Field, and with the Perry prom slated for that evening, the team will play in the first two matches, facing Des Moines Lincoln at 9 a.m. and Urbandale at 10:30 a.m.
