Grand View drowning victim identified as search continues

Grand View University student Kenton Greaves, 22, of Brooklyn, N.Y., is believed to have drowned Thursday evening while tubing on Lake Panorama with a group of friends.

A man presumed drowned in Lake Panorama Thursday evening has been identified as 22-year old Grand View University student Kenton Greaves of Brooklyn, N.Y.

The university issued a letter on Friday identifying Greaves after he disappeared about 6 p.m. Thursday while tubing on the lake with a group of friends.

Dive teams from the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, local fire departments and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources are working to recover Greaves’ body.

Greaves is a junior studying criminal justice at the university in Des Moines. , where he was a member of the wrestling team, and a Senior Criminal Justice major. Crisis counselors were being made available to Grand View University students and staff to help them deal with the loss.

Grand View University Director of Leadership and Counseling Kent Schornack informed the university’s students in an email sent Friday morning:

Dear Grand View Community,

I am saddened to report to you that Grand View student Ken Greaves died yesterday in an accident at Lake Panorama near Panora, Iowa. Ken was a wrestler and a senior criminal justice major at Grand View. His death has significantly impacted our Grand View wrestling community and the many he befriended.

Kenlyn Gordon (kgordon@grandview.edu) and I (kschornack@grandview.edu), Grand View counselors, are available for anyone who like to talk and desires support. Please feel free to email us if you would like to meet.

Campus Pastor Russ Lackey (rlackey@grandview.edu) and Alex Krumm (akrumm@grandview.edu), Director of Student Ministries, are also available to provide counsel and spiritual support to anyone, and do a wonderful job caring for our Grand View community.

Information regarding memorial services will be provided once it is obtained.
