PANORA — Kolby Shackelford lead all scorers with his 36-34–70 at Lake Panorama National Friday during district final action to secure a spot as an individual qualifier at the Class 2A Boys State Golf Tournament.[wpedon id=”82220″ align=”center”]

The two-day tourney will be held Thursday and Friday at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.

PCM fired a 326 and Des Moines Christian a 338 to earn the two team spots that qualified Friday. Host Panorama was third at 355, with Albia (361), Mt. Ayr (386), and Southwest Iowa (402) following.

Shackelford is now a combined 3-under par through 36 holes of district play and will appearing at his second consecutive state tourney after playing as member of the third-place Panther squad last year.

Also moving on as individuals was Earlham’s Ben Clement, who had a 37-36–73. PCM’s Dayton Boell (77) and DMC’s Drew Shisler (37-41–78) will join Clement and Shackelford in vying for individual honors.

Panorama head coach David Van Ahn noted the youth of the Panther team, as two juniors, a sophomore and three freshman played at the district meet.

Freshman Wyatt Appleseth was second for Panorama Friday with a 46-38–84. Lucas Leiferman carded a 50-47–97 and Ryan Klinge a 47-57–104.

“This young group amassed a season record of 39 wins and 17 losses,” Van Ahn said. “As those of us who play golf know, golf can sometimes be a humbling experience, and some of our young players felt that sting.”

“However, when we all look back on the entire season of play, it was a very rewarding year,” he added. “Now to the off-season and working on those factors (putting, chipping, course management, and mental toughness) that will make the next season even more exciting and rewarding than this one.”
