W-G's Emma Anderson bunts, scoring Katelyn Bandstra (20) during a game last season.

GUTHRIE CENTER — If the top of the seventh inning of Tuesday’s WCAC softball scrum between Woodward-Granger and host AC/GC did not have enough drama, what happened in the bottom of the frame could not help but fulfill the wish-list of those seeking an exciting contest.[wpedon id=”82220″ align=”center”]

W-G (0-10, 0-4) held a 2-0 lead after three frames and trailed, 3-2, entering the seventh in what had, to that point, been a rather pedestrian contest. The final frame provided plenty of action, with the home team slipping away with a 7-6 win.

Emma Anderson had singled and scored on a Chloe Houge single in the first, with W-G scoring when Anderson reached on an error and touched home off a Rian Jamison base hit in the third.

Savana Fuller and Jadayn Carrick each hit two-out singles for the hosts in the fifth, with Madalyn Kelsey launching a three-run home run to give the hosts a lead and serve as a beacon for what was to come.

W-G’s seventh-inning surge began with a Katelyn Bandstra one-out single. She scored when Jamison singled, with Houge singling to put two runners aboard. Natalie Weaver wiped the bags clean with a three-run shot of her own, giving the Hawks a sudden 6-3 lead.

A walk led to one out when Fuller reached on a fielder’s choice to start the bottom of the seventh. Carrick and Kelsey followed with base hits to put the score at 6-5, with Genevieve Hoover plating Kelsey to tie the game.

A pinch runner, on for Hoover, was thrown out at third base for the second out trying to move up an extra base on a Sierra O’Brien hit, with O’Brien taking second on the play and then moving to third on a wild pitch.

W-G skipper Owen Hunter opted to intentionally walk MaKayla Hoing, which brought Jorja Hoover to the plate. She responded with a base hit, plating O’Brien with the winning run.

Ava Petersen was the tough-luck loser, allowing seven run on 11 hits and three walks in 6-2/3 innings. She recorded one strikeout.

Fuller collected the win after allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks. She went all seven innings, striking out five.

W-G visits Saydel Thursday for a varsity-only contest at 7 p.m.
