Panorama pairs play well at State Coed Golf Meet

MARSHALLTOWN — The American Legion course, home of the Class 1A boys and 2A girls state golf tourneys this season, served Tuesday as the host of the one-day State Coed Golf Meet. The event features an alternate-shot format. [wpedon id=”82220″ align=”center”]

Some 64 pairs from all classes of schools chose to play, with Garner-Hayfield-Ventura seniors Bailee Frayne and Matthew Heineman winning the title with an even-par 33-38–71.

Junior Baylee Newell and sophomore Cyle Renaud of Atlantic were the runner-up at 38-35–73, with Dike-New Hartford state titleists Morgan Weber (soph) and Bo Weissenfluh (sr.) tied with two other couples for third with rounds of 77.

Greene County senior Rachel Danielson and Elijah Block fired a 38-41–79 to grab a medal for 10th place.

Panorama senior Anna Duis and 2A boys runner-up Kolby Shackelford, a sophomore, finished one stroke shy of the school record at the event with a 43-42–85, placing 22nd overall.

Panther freshmen Jordan Douglass and Wyatt Appleseth with 41st with a 44-46–90. They were among six couplings shooting 90, a group that included HLV’s  Kayla York and Mitch Thys, who tied with the Panorama pair for lowest score among two-freshmen teams. Both were tied for fourth-lowest score among two-underclassmen pairings.

Panorama senior Madi Fear was a girls state qualifier in 2A, but opted not to participate in the coed event.

The Panther boys are coached by David Van Ahn, with Melissa Hochstetler instructing the girls team. Hochstetler took the foursome to Marshalltown and provided the photographs accompanying this story.
