The Blue Ribbon Bacon Festivals fifth annual Bacoon Ride rolled through Perry Saturday morning, with temperatures headed for the mid-90s causing extra caution to avoid heat-related illness.
Riders into Perry were welcome to try some of Berkwood Farms’ Applewood Cowboy Bacon, served on Willis Avenue by the Hotel Pattee.
The heat has taken its toll on radiers. One cyclist passed out at the Minburn stop shortly after 9 a.m., and a number of persons have fainted or been reported dehydrated on the Dallas County portion of the trail Saturday afternoon.
Riders at the Dawson stop consumed mass quantities of watermelon and ice water before pushing on.
All proceeds from the ride benefit the Iowa Bicycle Coalition and the RAGBRAI’s Dream Team, the event’s cosponsors, and other Iowa charities.
